 Madagascar is a big island off the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is home to a wide range of unique plants and animals. Some 80 percent of the country’s species live nowhere else on Earth. Because Madagascar has been an island for millions of years, these species have developed in isolation. In addition, Madagascar has a wide range of environments. The east coast has a tropical rain forest. Farther west are grasslands and scattered trees. A desert lies at the island’s southern tip.
