Team Martinez visits Central High School, Little Rock, Arkansas (June 27, 2011 and July 2016) Little Rock Nine.

After the Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, many parts of our country dragged its feet on the integration of public schools. For example, in 1957,  the Governor of Arkansas, Orvil Faubus refused the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Nine remarkable young Black students chose to challenge the State of Arkansas and attend Central High School. At first, the National Guard under orders from the governor refused admission of these “Little Rock Nine” into the school. Eventually, President Eisenhower ordered the National Guard to enforce the Supreme Courts decision,  and escort these young  students into the school. This was an extremely dramatic event, the national media brought to our nation’s attention the ugly face of segregation and prejudice.
