During the Progressive era, Upton Sinclair penned a novel about the horrors and conditions of the meat packing industry. The novel encouraged President Theodore Roosevelt and Congress to pass early consumer protection in the Pure Food and Drug Act & the Meat Inspection Act. Muckrakers like Upton Sinclair were essential in addressing industrial grievances, political corruption, and social woes of early industrialized America.
